Moving in
I have found somewhere to live - now what do I do?
- Secure your accommodation with a deposit and make sure you get a receipt
- Visit NUS - Housing and deposit advice for more information.
- Inform the College of your new term time address – this is really important
What is a tenancy agreement?
It’s a document that tells you what you can and cannot do within your new accommodation. Whatever type of accommodation you choose, you should get a tenancy agreement and a full inventory (list of equipment in the accommodation).
Rules vary but arrangements should be clear on these points:
- Details of the accommodation
- Start and end date of your tenancy
- Rent - amount and how it is paid e.g. weekly, fortnightly, monthly or monthly in advance. It should be clear how much notice is required by each party e.g. one week, one month
- What furniture and equipment is provided - you will probably have to supply bed linen and crockery
Make sure you read ALL the small print and understand what you are signing. For more information on the types of tenancy agreements, see information from the Citizens Advice Bureau on Tenancy Agreements.
Should I take out insurance?
It's a good idea to insure your possessions so that you're covered where you live and when you're at College. The College is not responsible for loss or theft of your personal belongings.
Will I have to pay Council Tax?
You shouldn't have to pay this if you are a full-time student and:
- All the people living with you are full-time students OR
- You are the only person living at a property
If a non-student lives in the property with you the residence then becomes liable for a council tax bill. This does not mean that you will have to pay. The College Advice and Enrolment Team and Reception will provide the certificate you need to register for exemption.
Family homes where more than one non-student adult lives will be classified as eligible for full payment of council tax. You may therefore be asked to pay your share.
Will I have to pay council tax if I am an overseas student?
Not if you are a full-time student.
