Personal issues and counselling

Are you feeling anxious or worried?

Whatever the problem, we are here to help

Photo: A student speaks with a welfare adviser. It can be really difficult coping with your studies whilst going through major changes in your life. If you are experiencing personal difficulties and are worried about how this is affecting your college work, you can meet with a Student Adviser from the Welfare and Support Team.

We can talk through any personal difficulties you may be experiencing and try and help you make sense of them. For example:

  • Low self esteem, anxiety or lack of confidence
  • Problems with relationships or sexuality
  • Getting behind with College work or finding it hard to concentrate
  • A lack of motivation, feeling down and worries about the future
  • Difficult decisions e.g. leaving home
  • Problems with drugs or alcohol (we have specialist counsellors we can refer you to)
  • Sleeping problems
  • Worries about appearance

So if you have a problem or concern, whatever it may be, and you need to talk to someone confidentially, a friendly Student Adviser will be there for you. If you’re not sure who to turn to it’s always worth coming to see us.

The College's Talk about Faith team also offers students and staff the chance to talk about problems we all face in our lives from bereavement, family issues and questions about faith.

Is there a counselling service?

The College counselling service offers free, confidential counselling to help students overcome their difficulties to enable them to complete their studies successfully. Initially you will need to see a Student Adviser from the Welfare and Support Team and if appropriate we will refer you to the counselling service.

Can I have counselling?

All our counsellors are trained, qualified and experienced staff from the counselling organisation Off the Record, and work within the British Association for Counselling (BAC) code of ethics.

What if I don’t qualify for the College Counselling Service?

You can still come and talk to a Student Adviser from the Welfare and Support Team. We will do our best to help you and refer you to a suitable external agency if necessary. Don’t forget you may also contact your GP directly to discuss any problems affecting your health.
