Students with disabilities or learning difficulties

I am disabled and/or have learning difficulties. Can I get support with travel to and from College?

Yes.

If you are aged 16-18 and have a disability or learning difficulty you should apply to your LEA for financial assistance with transport to and from College.

Our Disability & Mental Support Service (DMHSS) will assist you with your application. Assessments for the LEA are usually carried out at course interview or you will be invited in for a discussion. We look to establish the nature of the support requirements and decide upon realistic options for travel.

What else can you do to support me getting to and from College?

We will discuss options with you so that you can get to and from College as independently as possible.

This may include providing a Personal Support Worker (PSW) to assist you to learn to use public transport.

Alternatively, we can also give you details of external agencies that provide travel buddies. If you need someone to meet when you arrive at College, then we can arrange for this to happen. If you are using a taxi, with your permission we can link you up with other students so that you can share costs if appropriate.

One solution will not suit everyone and we will work with you to identify the best possible outcome for your circumstances.

See below for links to the LEA’s websites and Travel Policy Statement.

What help can I get with travel to and from College?

Unfortunately we cannot offer assistance with travel costs to and from College from the Learner Support Fund as support with travel is the responsibility of the Local Authorities (LA).

Visit your LA’s website for further information.

Can I use my EMA towards travel costs?

Yes.

Your EMA is intended to assist you with costs faced whilst at College. Don’t forget, you can also apply to the Learner Support Fund for other course related costs.

Cycling and walking to CollegeCycling

The College actively promotes walking and cycling to College and encourages our students to be healthy and safe whilst travelling.

Each of the College centres has safe places for you to lock your bikes and we have recently installed self-enclosed bike lockers with a space to store your helmet and clothing if required.

Speak to the Reception Teams to pick up your free lock.

Keep your eyes peeled at College for our cycling workshops and healthy living weeks and also for our ‘On Your Bike’ scheme where we give students the opportunity to apply for a FREE bicycle!
