Who is this course for?
This professional Accounting (Bookkeeping) Level 1 course is designed for individuals aged 19 and over.
It can help you gain bookkeeping skills and to find out more about accounts and bookkeeping as a career.
What you'll learn
Students studying this qualification will learn the skills and supporting knowledge in one mandatory unit, Bookkeeping Fundamentals. Topics covered include:
- The role of the bookkeeper including an understanding of the importance of timely and accurate work as well as ethical principles
- Fundamental accounting and bookkeeping concepts and terminology
- Business documentation including invoices and credit notes
- Processing customer and supplier transactions, receipts and payments
- Bank reconciliations
- Dual effect of transactions
- The role of software in bookkeeping and accounting including software security

How is the course delivered and assessed?
This course is delivered at our College Green Centre. The course learning outcomes are assessed by one end of course, computer-marked AAT exam.
Future career and study opportunities
This Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping qualification can lead to further study and/or employment within the bookkeeping, finance or administration sectors.
Progression courses include:
- Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting
- Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping
This Level 1 qualification could also lead to employment in junior or supporting administration or finance roles such as accounts administrator, accounts junior or accounts receivable/payable assistant.
Additional costs
You will need to pay a one-off AAT subscription fee – this is subject to change but currently £44.
If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
