Who is this course for?

If you’re a school leaver and interested in animal care this course is an ideal stepping stone towards achieving your ambition.

You should be interested in working with animals and finding out how to care for them.

What you'll learn

During the Level 1 Certificate in Animal Care course you will learn how to handle and care for small animals correctly, including how to check their health. You will work with a wide range of animals. You will also learn how to use your initiative and how to work as part of a team.

During this vocational course, you will:

  • complete a series of animal care assignments.
  • learn how to organise yourself and develop a Personal Progression Plan.
  • develop your employability skills.
  • undertake volunteering or work experience.

You will take an English and Maths Functional Skills qualification at the right level for you. If you achieve a Grade 3 for GCSE English or Maths at school you will undertake a resit in these subjects.

Course entry requirements

Two GCSEs at grade 3 which must include maths and English.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This is a one-year, full-time course. You will be expected to attend College for three or four days a week.

During this course, you will be assessed in a variety of different ways to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills throughout the year.

You will learn from our experienced and supportive teachers and be assessed through a mix of practical activities, projects and presentations. Most of your practical learning will take place in our Animal Centre, where we house our small animals and reptiles, but you will also get the opportunity to do work placements. English and Maths will be assessed by written tests and you will carry out a number of work-based assignments for the Personal and Social Development qualification.

Future career and study opportunities

Your next steps will depend on the level of learning and personal development that you reach and the qualifications that you have gained. You could progress onto a Level 2 course, an apprenticeship or employment.

Additional costs

As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery.

To ensure you work to professional standards you will be required to wear a uniform in the Animal Centre – the cost is approximately £30. You may also be required to contribute to educational activities.
