This course for school leavers aged 16-18.

Who is this course for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18 who may wish to explore a vocational route through a full-time course.
This course is designed to inspire and enthuse school leavers who wish to achieve a career in the science sector, develop the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the industry and support progression to more specialised Level 3 courses.
What you'll learn
This course will allow you to understand theory and application.
You will cover modules such as:
- the principles of science
- health applications of life science
- scientific skills
- how scientific theories are formulated
- investigating a crime scene.
Employers value employees who are able to communicate effectively both verbally and using electronic communication methods. The qualification provides opportunities for you to develop your communication skills as you progress through the course. This can be achieved through presentations and in discussions where you have the opportunity to express your opinions.
Course entry requirements
To join this course, you will need four GCSE Grade 3 (D) or above including English Language, Maths and Science. You will also need a recommendation from your school detailing your passion and enthusiasm for science.
You will be given an initial assessment before joining the course. Your assessment results and previous learning will determine the level you study at.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
During this course, you will carry out vocationally specific workplace case-study materials, listen to visiting speakers and local employers and use trade journals to study. The Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Applied Science has eight mandatory units and a choice of eight units from 16 optional specialist units.
You will be assessed through internally-assessed assignments and external exams.
Future career and study opportunities
After successfully completing this course, you can move on to seek employment at a junior level in companies which manufacture pharmaceuticals, computer-chip technology materials or food products. You can also work for companies which investigate the causes of diseases or help to combat pollution.
You could progress from this qualification to related vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Level 3 Diploma and extended Diploma, specifically the Pearson BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science, including the Forensic Science and Medical Science endorsed pathways from which our students then pursue courses such as nursing, midwifery, radiography, forensics, psychology.

Applied Science students need to pay for a City of Bristol College lab coat.
