Aviation Operations Level 2 City of Bristol College

This one-year, part-time course will prepare you for employment in a variety of roles in aviation ground operations. If you complete the course successfully and meet employer requirements, you will be guaranteed a job interview with an international ground handler.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 19 and over. You should be interested in the aviation industry and be committed to developing your understanding and skills in order to work in the sector. Whether you are looking to begin your career, change career or return to work, this could be a great opportunity to upgrade your skills, build your confidence and your career prospects.

What you'll learn

You will learn about the aviation industry and different job roles and requirements for working with passengers, baggage and aircraft. For example, airport check-in, security, baggage processing, aircraft marshalling, arrivals services, boarding and dispatch. You will develop the knowledge, skills and qualities you need to work in these roles, for example aviation language and procedures, communications skills and customer service skills. If you need to improve your maths, IT and English skills to meet employer requirements, you can study these subjects at college.

Course entry requirements

To join this course, you need English Language GCSE grade 3 (D) or above, or English Functional Skills at Level 1 or above. You also need experience of working in a customer service role and a passion to work in the aviation industry.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

You will attend college one day a week, for one year, so you will also have time to work part-time while you study. You will be taught through a mix of classroom learning, projects and practical activities. At college you will learn in our specially designed Tourism Hub, which includes a fully equipped aircraft cabin with seats, equipment and landslides. Additional learning will take place at Bristol Airport. You will be assessed continuously through assignments and practical activities.

Future career and study opportunities

Most of our adult students progress to employment in the aviation industry in a range of roles in passenger, baggage and aircraft handling. If you complete the course successfully and meet employer requirements, you will be fast tracked directly to a job interview for the role of your choice. You could be working at Bristol Airport within six months of starting the course.

Additional costs

You will need to buy your aviation uniform and pay for trips throughout the year. If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.

To keep everyone safe, we’ve reduced the number of people in our buildings at one time. Most of our courses include sessions taught at the college supported by online learning.
