Barbering Level 2 for adults City of Bristol CollegeThis part-time barbering course is taught one day a week for 34 weeks, and will set you up for employment as a junior Hair Stylist or for further training.
It could be the first step in your training to become a professional barber. If you are already working in the hairdressing industry and want to extend your portfolio of skills to include barbering, this course is a great way to build on your existing knowledge.
This Barbering Level 2 course is for adults aged 19+.

Who is this course for?
This course is for adults aged 19 and over, who want to learn the foundations of barbering, either to begin a career in men’s hair services or for professional development within the industry.
What you'll learn
Barbering and men’s grooming is a growing business with plenty of opportunities to begin and develop your career if you have the right skills and personal qualities.
On this course, you will learn a wide range of barbering skills and techniques including:
- shampooing
- cutting and styling men’s hair
- creating beard shapes
- facial styling.
You will also learn about a range of products.
In addition, you will learn excellent customer care skills, so that you can consult and advise clients effectively, and you will learn about issues of health and safely in the workplace.
Course entry requirements
To join this course you need:
- GCSE Grade 3 (D) or above in Maths and English
or
- Functional Skills Level 1 or above in Maths and English
or
- to take an initial assessment and achieve a result of Level 1 or above in Maths and English.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
This part-time course is taught at college in our professional hair salons, for one day a week for 34 weeks.
Your teachers have a wealth of professional and teaching experience and excellent links with local employers and industry experts.
You will have opportunities to work with real clients to perfect your skills and you may have the opportunity to showcase your creativity and technical ability.
Your work will be assessed throughout the course through practical assessments and assignments.
Future career and study opportunities
This qualification is recognised by the British Barbering Association and The Hairdressing Council. You will be able to progress into a career as a junior barber with a wide range of establishments in the UK and around the world. This includes: barber shops, hair salons, spas, hotels and cruise ships, or you might prefer to work for yourself.
Alternatively, you could progress to a Women’s Hairdressing course to develop your technical and creative abilities and extend your career opportunities, for example by working in fashion, media, TV or film.
If you completed the course to extend your existing hairdressing skills, you will be able to extend your client base, to include male customers.
Additional costs
You will need to buy a college uniform which costs £32, and your barbering kit which costs approximately £159.50.
If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
