This one-year, full-time course will give you professional knowledge and practical skills in beauty therapy.
This course for school leavers aged 16-18.
It will prepare you to work as a Beauty Therapist in a variety of settings, as well as equipping you for further professional training and career development.
Who is it for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18, who want to turn their personal interest and enthusiasm for beauty into a professional career as a beauty therapist.
You should enjoy working with people, in a team environment and individually, and understand the important of working professionally to achieve excellent standards of work and customer service.
What you'll learn
A career in beauty therapy can be varied, practical, creative and people focused, and there is high demand for professionally trained therapists in the UK and throughout the world.
On this course you will gain techniques and product knowledge in order to carry out a wide range of beauty treatments including: manicure and pedicure, facial massage, waxing, eyebrow shaping, eyelash and brow tinting, makeup application and head massage. You will also gain theoretical knowledge so that you can work to professional standards in beauty therapy and related industries, including anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and communications.
If you are aged 16-18 and you have not yet gained a grade 4 in GCSE English Language and/or Maths, you will also study these subjects at the right level for you, either as Functional Skills or as GCSE resits, if you have already achieved a grade 3 (D).
To join this course, you need five GCSEs at grade 3 (D), including grade 3 (D) in English. You should have a keen interest in the subject and good communication skills, and you need to be able to demonstrate an excellent record of attendance and punctuality.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will learn in our excellent professional salons and treatment rooms, with the expert guidance and support of our highly experienced staff.
You will have opportunities to work with real clients and paying customers, and you will take part in national beauty and photographic competitions, where you will refine and showcase your skills and creativity. You will benefit from our excellent links with local employers and you will have opportunities to put what you learn into practice through work experience at a minimum of 36 hours a year. We have a number of guest speakers to inspire and encourage our students, these include: Steiner, De’cleor and professionals from local successful businesses.
You will be assessed continually throughout the course, through practical and theory assessments, assignments and online tests. There is no final exam. If you study English and Maths, these subjects will be assessed by exams.
Future career and study opportunities
When you complete the course, you could progress to a Level 3 course to extend your skills, knowledge and career prospects, for example in Beauty Therapy or in Fashion and Photographic Make-up.
Alternatively, you could seek an apprenticeship to continue training while working, or you could go directly into employment in a range of settings, for example, in salons, make-up counters in high street shops, eyebrow bars.
You could also join one of our short specialist courses to build your portfolio of professional skills, for example Gel Polish, Indian Head Massage or Waxing.
You will need to buy the College uniform which costs £32, the beauty therapy kit which costs £241.55. You will have the chance to visit Beauty UK, in London or Birmingham, and you would be required to contribute towards travel costs of approximately £15.
If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
