Who is this course for?

This course is for young people aged 16-18, who want to turn their personal interest and enthusiasm for beauty into a professional career as a beauty therapist. 

You should enjoy working with people, in a team environment and individually, and understand the importance of working professionally to achieve excellent standards of work and customer service. 

Learners must be prepared to work on each other and clients for assessment purposes 

City & Guilds require a professional dress code, which includes: 

  • Full uniform – tunic 
  • Closed-toed shoes 
  • No nail extensions or gel nails 
  • No eyelash extensions 
  • Jewellery permitted is one pair of stud earrings and one wedding band 
  • Kit is required for every session and to practise at home 

What you'll learn

A career in beauty therapy can be varied, practical, creative and people focused, and there is high demand for professionally trained therapists in the UK and throughout the world. 

On this course, you will gain techniques and product knowledge in order to carry out a wide range of beauty treatments including facials, manicures, pedicures, eye treatments, Waxing and lash lift. 

You will also gain theoretical knowledge so that you can work to professional standards in beauty therapy and related industries, including anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and communications. 

If you are aged 16-18 and you have not yet gained a grade 4 in GCSE English and Maths you will also study these subjects at the right level for your GCSE resits. 

Course entry requirements

To join this course, you need four GCSEs at grade 3 (D), including English, Maths and Science. You should have a keen interest in the subject and good communication skills, and you need to be able to demonstrate an excellent record of attendance and punctuality. 

How is the course delivered and assessed?

You will learn in our excellent professional salons, with the expert guidance and support of our highly experienced staff. 

You will have opportunities to work with real clients and paying customers, carrying out services to gain assessments required to achieve the qualification. You will benefit from our excellent links with local employers, and you will have opportunities to put what you learn into practice through work experience. We have a number of guest speakers to inspire and encourage our students from local businesses.  

You will be assessed continually throughout the course through practical and theory assessments, assignments and online tests. There is no final exam. If you study English and Maths, these subjects will be assessed by GCSE exams. 

Future career and study opportunities

After completing this course, you could progress to Beauty Therapy Level 3, go to work in a salon or eyebrow bar or as a mobile beauty therapist providing Level 2 treatments.

Additional costs

You will need to buy the college uniform which costs approx. £75, the beauty therapy kit, which costs approx. £90 You will have the opportunity to attend Beauty Trips throughout the year for approx £70. 

If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
