Business Level 3 City of Bristol College

A full-time business course for school leavers aged 16-18.

This course offers you a chance to learn all about the world of business. You will gain confidence and independence and be able to present yourself to potential employers.

You will learn how to market products, communicate effectively and manage events.

At the end of year one, you will achieve the Foundation Diploma. You can increase this to an Extended Diploma, if you complete Year 2, which is equivalent to three A levels and converts to UCAS points if you want to continue to higher level studies.

If you’re aged 19+ and this will be your first Level 3 course, it could be free for you under the government’s National Skills Fund (NSF) scheme. Get in touch to find out more.

Who is this course for?

Do you have a real desire to work in the world of business?

This course is for people aged 16-18. The skills and knowledge you will gain from this course will help you gain a head start at interview.

To join this course you just need to be keen to succeed, prepared to work and study hard and willing to learn new skills.

What you'll learn

You will study a variety of topics to prepare you for work or further study. We will also make sure that you have the Maths, IT and English skills that employers need.

Topics include:

  • developing teams in business
  • marketing
  • events management
  • business accounting
  • communication skills.

You will also have the opportunity, as part of your programme, to spend 30 hours on a relevant work placement.

Course entry requirements

5 x GCSE’s at grade C/4 or above including English Language, and Maths.

For STEM subjects can be more specific e.g. Engineering – 4 x GCSE’s at grade C/4 or above including English Language, Maths and science. Science and/or maths must be grade 5.

Alternatively, a BTEC Level 2 in Engineering (overall Grade Merit) with Merits in the Mathematics and Science units, and GCSE grade C/4 in both English Language and Mathematics.

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will need to provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional, this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence- based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed in a variety of ways throughout the course including assignments, role play, coursework and group work.

Future career and study opportunities

Success on the course allows progression to a range of higher education courses at university or College.

The College has a number of partnership agreements with universities such as Plymouth, Bath Spa and UWE. These agreements allow students to undertake Foundation Degrees at City of Bristol College before progressing to an honours degree at the university concerned.

The course also prepares you for a range of jobs in the public, private and voluntary sectors including in a marketing department, in retail management, in an accounts department.

You could also further your studies with an Honours Degree in Business at university or a Business Foundation Degree at our Ashley Down Centre.

Additional costs

This course is free to anyone aged 16-18. You shouldn’t expect any additional costs for this course.

However, if you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help for any extra costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
