This is a one-year, full-time course which focuses on the principles and practices of the business of complementary therapy.
Students can expect to learn how to best treat different areas of the body for their needs, using techniques like aromatherapy, body massage and reflexology.
Who is this course for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18 and adults aged 19+ who are interested in broadening their depth of knowledge around the body, how to correctly care for it and promote a healthy lifestyle.
What you'll learn
With more and more people wanting to look after themselves and other people, complementary therapies has stepped into the spotlight as an aid to modern medicine.
You will gain industry knowledge and experience through hands-on classes with both students and paying clients in a beauty therapy salon at College Green Centre.
You will learn about the basic principles of health and
safety and how to correctly care for and store products as well as gain an in-depth understanding of anatomy and
physiology, including the muscular, digestive, skeletal and respiratory system.
Through this course, you will study: aromatherapy where you learn the ins-and-outs of 42 different essential oils, Swedish body massage, reflexology to encourage relaxation, aid in digestion and soothe anxiety and stress to name a few. Other areas you will also cover an introduction to health eating to understand and be able to advice clients.
Course entry requirements
To join this course, you must have five GCSEs in grade 3 (D) including English, or an equivalent such as Level 2 Functional Skills.
Students may also be accepted if they can demonstrate a certain level of understanding for the course specifics. Alternatively, students holding other Level 2 vocational courses.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
Students must wear the uniform tunic and trousers and black, closed shoes to all lessons. Jewellery should be kept to a minimum and nails but be clean and cannot be past natural length. You will be in class three days a week which is made up of practical and theory lessons in the salon.
You will be assessed throughout the year in a variety of practical and written graded tasks. You will be asked to gather 196 case studies throughout the year of studies and you will collect all of the above in two portfolios of work which will assist you in finding employment in the future.
Future career and study opportunities
After completing this course, students are fully-qualified practitioners who are capable of working in the industry. Past students have gone on to work freelance, for larger companies or continue their studies.
Students can choose to specialise in Sports Massage Therapy at the College or can go elsewhere to study Reiki, crystal healing and further nutritional studies.
Students on this course must purchase a uniform which is £32 as well as a professional kit which is approximately £110.

To keep everyone safe, we’ve reduced the number of people in our buildings at one time. Most of our courses include sessions taught at the college supported by online learning.
