This full-time, one-year course will give you a broad understanding of computing as well as giving you the chance to study some areas of computing in more depth.
There are practical aspects to the course which are linked to the world of work. You will also gain the skills, knowledge and understanding you will need to take your studies further.
This course is offered at our College Green Centre. It is suitable for anyone aged 16+.
Who is this course for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18-year-olds who are interested in Computing and IT and either want to move on to a higher level of study after finishing this course or look for employment in the industry. If you are 19 and over, you can apply for this course but will have to pay course fees – however we do offer a Level 2 Adult Part Time course in IT Support that may be more suitable for adult learners.
What you'll learn
This course covers a broad range of Computing specialisms designed to give you relevant up to date knowledge and skills to progress in the tech sector. You will engage with practical activity and develop technical skills which can be used at industry and at higher course levels. During this course you will cover both software and hardware aspects of Computing and IT such as development, networking and cyber security. The units are designed to give you experience in many different elements of computing you can expect to find when you start your exciting new career in the workplace.
Course entry requirements
To join this course, you will need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) including Maths and/or English or Functional Skills at level 1, or an equivalent Level 1 qualification such as a Certificate and Diploma.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
The course is made up of a number of units that are marked using internally set projects and 2 external based units.
Each internally assessed unit will be given an assignment and you will receive a grade of Pass, Merit and Distinction.
The 2 Externally Set units are also marked with a Pass, Merit and Distinction and released by the awarding body. The individual unit grades are then combined to give a total grade for the course.
Assessment will cover technical applied knowledge and skills, enabling you to demonstrate knowledge and competency. You will receive guidance and support from your teachers to enable you to develop and improve ahead of each assignment.
Future career and study opportunities
This qualification is designed to give you a practical understanding of the computing and digital tech sector, and the routes available in the industry. As a level 2 qualification, the common progression is on one of our Computing Level 3 programmes, such as the BTEC Computing Foundation Diploma, IT Foundation Diploma however there are routes available to more creative sectors such as Games Design and Digital Graphic Design.
This course is free to attend for anyone aged between 16-18. There is no formal kit list for consumables, if you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
Learner who are 19+ and do not already have a level 2 Qualification will also be funded.
