Construction (Carpentry and Joinery) Level 1 City of Bristol College

This one-year, full-time programme of study will introduce you to site carpentry and joinery. You will develop skills in the kind of carpentry and joinery needed on a typical building site.

The course will give you the skills and knowledge that you need to progress onto a Level 2 course, an apprenticeship or employment.

Who is this course for?

If you’re a school leaver and interested in carpentry or joinery, this practical course is an ideal stepping stone towards a career in the industry.

You will learn work-ready skills including making carpentry joints and frames, use of power tools, understanding how to work safely on site and principles of construction.

What you'll learn

As part of this course, you will complete a Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry. You will also need to study English and Maths alongside your course.

Course entry requirements

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to tour our excellent facilities and ask any questions you may have.

You will be asked to provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

You will need 3 GCSEs at Grade 3, including Maths and English. Some Level 1 qualifications in trade-based subjects may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This is a full-time course. Alongside your College tutorials, you will be required to take part in work experience and self-directed study.

You will also attend sessions to develop your employability and personal skills.

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, including practical assessments and exams to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills throughout the year.

Future career and study opportunities

On successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry or Joinery course.

You could also apply for an apprenticeship in the site carpentry or bench joinery industry or employment.

Additional costs

As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, you may likely need to pay for travel and stationary.

You will need your own protective footwear for practical sessions. You will also need to buy a workwear uniform.

You may need a high-visibility vest, protective goggles and gloves for some tasks. We offer some equipment which is free for you to use in college. 

If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
