This course is designed to deliver the practical skills to design, develop, build and test a web-based software application.
The content aims to develop your abilities and proficiency in the most relevant and sought-after coding languages and tools for both front and back-end development.
To support this, you will be given a series of immersive projects that you can complete through a blend of facilitated and online guided learning hours supported by online tutoring, mentoring and community activities.
This course is awarded by the Code Institute, and applicants must complete the Institute’s 5-step Coding Challenge set by the Institute before applying. Who is this course for?
This qualification is a pathway to employment for those who want to work in the tech industry. It gives learners the skills and experience needed to take up roles in software/web application development, junior full-stack/front-end/back-end development, junior quality assurance, engineer or support engineer. It is suitable for those with no previous coding experience and for those who want to refresh their knowledge with the most relevant coding languages.
This is a blended course with online tuition provided by City of Bristol College along with supported online learning and self-study using the Code Institute Build Learner Management System (LMS). The online delivery features a live tutor support 24 hours a day and a highly engaged slack community where learners can interact, network and provide peer-to-peer support. The LMS access enables students to study where and when they wish, and a student care team provides learners with day-to-day support.
What you'll learn
The qualification is made up of 4 units that progress you through front-end and back-end processes, learning coding process and flow. The units are:
- User Centric Frontend Development
This unit aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to build a Frontend web application. It includes understanding the principles of responsive design, documentation and effective layout of content.
- Interactive Frontend Development
This unit aim to develop knowledge and skills needed to build a dynamic, interactive Frontend web application. It includes understanding user input and control when interacting with a web application. It also includes understanding the principles of manual testing for debugging.
- Data Centric Development
This focuses on understanding and developing the practical skills to build a Back End web application. Topics covered include data storage and data management using relational and non-relational databases.
- Full Stack Frameworks with Django
Learners build on their existing skills and learn how to integrate them effectively to build a Full Stack web application. The unit covers the use of frameworks, APIs, automated testing, persistent storage, user authentication and ecommerce functionality
Course entry requirements
- You must be aged 19 or over
- Applicants must complete the 5-step coding challenge set by Code Institute
- You need to be working at least level 2 for English and Maths
- There is no requirement for learners to have prior skills, knowledge or understanding however and consider whether applicants have the necessary foundations to undertake this programme of study at level 5.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will be assessed through four projects which are met to each unit and cover each aspect of web application development.
These projects form a portfolio which to showcase learner’s practical skills, knowledge and competency to employers.
The work is marked internally and then verified externally by Gateway Qualifications.
The units are marked Pass, Merit or Distinction.

This qualification is designed to open learners up to a career in tech. Graduates of the course will continue to develop their skills in their new role and be able to support them in finding a specialist area suited to their personal strengths and preferences.

The cost of the course is £5400, and is eligible for an Advanced Learning Loan. Information on how the loan can be found on the gov.uk website.
