Working with Children in Early Years and Primary Settings Certificate

This course is for young people aged 16-18 who are working towards a career in early years education and care for children from birth to age seven.

You will cover topics such as:

• Health and safety of babies and young children in the early years
• Equality, diversity and inclusive practice in Early Years Settings
• Safeguarding, protection and welfare of babies and young children in Early Years Settings
• Understand how to support children’s development

You will need to need to complete 250 hours work experience during the course. This will support you to apply your knowledge and skills in a work environment.

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including Maths and/or English or a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject plus GCSEs in Maths and/or English, or a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and/or English.

We will invite you to a Course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Some Level 2 Technical qualifications may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course. This may include having English or Maths at a Grade 4

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. ‘Knowledge’ based outcomes will be taught and assessed in college. ‘Skills’ based outcomes must be achieved with reference to a real work environment and must include direct observation within the workplace.

Learners may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:

• nursery practitioner
• classroom assistant
• pre-school practitioner.

This qualification allows progression on to the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other relevant Level 3 qualifications relating to early years and child care if maths and English are secured at a Grade 4 or above.

As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery.

Many courses offer learning opportunities that you may need to pay for. This may include things like study visits and visiting speakers. We will let you know in advance if there will be additional costs.
