Additional information

Who is this course for?

This course is one of the ESOL Vocational Short Courses which are for adults whose first language is not English and who are hoping to learn some of the key skills and language needed for using computers, tablets and smartphones.

This course is offered at the Ashley Down Centre. This ESOL Vocational Short Course is for students who have at least an elementary level of English (Entry Level 1 or above).

What you'll learn

You will learn in face-to-face classes about topics such as: basic hardware vs. software, formatting, emailing, using Teams, saving and finding files again, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, online safety and online shopping.

Course entry requirements

You must be a non-native speaker of English and have at least Entry Level 1 ESOL. You must also be able to commit to coming to class one day a week for 10 weeks.

We are firmly committed to finding the right course for you to ensure you can flourish! Talk to us today if you have any concerns about the application process, we are here to help take you to the next level.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered face-to-face once a week. There are no formal assessments as this is an ILP course (Individual Learning Plan) which means that you will set your own goals at the beginning of the class and work to achieve them throughout the ten weeks with the help of the lecturer.

At the end of the 10 weeks, if you have achieved all of your goals, you will receive a College Certificate.

Future career and study opportunities

This course is designed to be a stepping stone into further studies or employment. Ideally, you will finish this course and then join a twice-a-week Adult ESOL course, another 10 week ESOL Vocational Short Course or a full-time or part-time vocational course like.

If you would like to continue improving your digital skills, we would recommend applying for the Essential Digital Skills class after you complete this course.

Additional costs

This course is free for most applicants! The Learner Services team at reception will be able to determine if you can take the course for free.

If you have lived in the UK or a country in the EEA for the past 3 years, you will meet the residency requirements and could take the course for free, but there are other specialised ways of meeting the requirements that the Learner Services team can explain further (i.e. refugees and asylum seekers can take the course for free).
