This one-year, full-time course will introduce you to the aviation industry and the different jobs that people do. You will develop the skills, knowledge and practical experience you need to gain employment in ground or air operations or to progress onto further learning.

Who is this course for?

This course is for young people aged 16-18.

You should be interested in finding out about the aviation industry, and committed to learning and developing personally to increase your future employment opportunities and further study options.

What you'll learn

You will learn what is involved in the aviation industry, including the language of aviation and the destinations that people can fly to. You will learn about the role of air cabin crew and operational roles within an airport such as check-in, baggage handling and aircraft dispatch. You will also develop the communications skills and personal qualities you need to work in the industry.

If you have not yet gained a Grade 4 (C) in GCSE English or Maths, you will study these subjects alongside your course, either as Functional Skills qualifications or GCSE resits, if you already have a Grade 3 (D).

Course entry requirements

3 x GCSEs at grades 1 to 3 including Maths and English, or previous vocational qualification.However, if you don’t have any formal qualifications, don’t worry, simply let us know and we can assess you to ensure that you will be able to achieve well on the course.

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to tour our excellent facilities and ask any questions you may have.

You will be asked to provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is taught through a mix of classroom learning, tutorials, practical activities, visits, assignments and work experience. You will be assessed in a variety of ways to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills throughout the year, including assignments and practical activities. Maths and English will be assessed through tests and exams, but you will be fully prepared by your supportive teachers.

Future career and study opportunities

Your next steps will depend on the level of learning and personal development that you reach and the qualifications that you have gained. You could progress to a Level 2 course in airport operations, cabin crew or travel and tourism. You could seek an Apprenticeship and continue your training while working, or you might prefer to go directly into employment. We will support and guide you to achieve your potential and your goals.

Additional costs

You will need to buy your aviation uniform and pay for trips throughout the year. This will be approximately £180. If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
