Additional information

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for aspiring filmmakers, writers and creatives who want to build a career in Film and Television. It’s designed for those progressing from A Levels or a Level 3 qualification in a related subject who are ready to take their passion for storytelling and screen production to the next level.

What you'll learn

You’ll develop the creative and technical skills to bring your film ideas to life — using research, inspiration and referencing to explore style, tone and character while casting the most convincing screen talent. You’ll aim to find truth in performance and authenticity in the stories you choose to tell. You’ll also learn how to problem-solve on set, developing inventive camera techniques to achieve high production value even within real-world constraints — for example, recreating a crane shot with a drone in a fly-safe air zone.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the confidence, knowledge and technical expertise to produce a short film ready for festival submission, as well as a deeper understanding of professional film production. You’ll finish with a clear sense of your preferred specialism and a professional portfolio that includes marketing materials, festival submissions and targeted social media content designed to reach your audience and promote your creative work.

Course entry requirements

x3 A levels at grade c or above. or an equivalent Level 3 course and achieving a minimum of merit.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through guest lectures, workshops and practical projects. You’ll receive both formative and summative feedback throughout your studies, culminating in a final production that showcases your skills and creative development.

Future career and study opportunities

After completing the first year, you’ll achieve the Level 4 HNC in Film & Television. You can then progress to the Level 5 HND in Film & Television in your second year. The course is closely linked with industry through partnerships with leading production companies across the city. Regular visits to film festivals, independent screenings and networking events will give you real-world experience and valuable employment opportunities within the sector.

Alternatively, after completing your Level 5 HND, you may choose to undertake a one-year top-up programme to achieve a full BA (Hons) qualification, or progress further to an MA degree in a specialist area of interest.
