Floristry Level 2 Top-up Diploma City of Bristol College

On this part-time, one-year course, you will build on your existing floristry skills to design and construct floral arrangements for weddings, funerals and special functions.

You will also learn how to care for houseplants, create planted designs and display floristry goods effectively for sale.

With a balance of practical and theory-based learning, this course prepares you for employment as a retail, wedding, or freelance florist, or for further study at Level 3.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 19 and over. You should have an interest in floristry and the ability to work creatively.

What you'll learn

On this course, you will learn how to plan, prepare and construct floral arrangements for weddings, funerals and other functions. You’ll gain practical skills in creating and maintaining planted designs, as well as caring for a range of houseplants.

The course also introduces you to function decorating using floral displays, helping you understand how flowers can enhance events and spaces.

In addition, you’ll learn how to display floristry goods effectively for sale, giving you insight into the retail side of the industry. Each topic is designed to build your confidence and creativity as a florist.

Course entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including Maths and/or English or a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject plus GCSEs in Maths and/or English, or a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and/or English.

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or a relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Some Level 2 technical qualifications may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course. This may include having English or Maths at Grade 4

To join this course, you do not need previous floristry experience but you do need a passion to work in the industry.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is delivered in a classroom setting, with a balanced mix of practical and theory-based learning. Approximately 50% of your time will be spent on hands-on floristry work, developing your technical skills and creative techniques. The remaining 50% focuses on the theoretical aspects of floristry, including written work, research, and design planning.

Assessment is continuous and takes a variety of forms to support different learning styles. You will be assessed through a combination of practical observations, written tests and the completion of a detailed portfolio that showcases your progress and achievements throughout the course.

Future career and study opportunities

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be well-prepared to take the next steps in your floristry career. Many students go on to work in the industry as retail florists, wedding florists, or freelance floral designers, using the skills and knowledge gained on the course to create professional and creative floral arrangements.

You may also choose to progress to further study by enrolling on the Level 3 Floristry qualification, which can open up even more advanced career paths and business opportunities within the floristry and events sectors.
