This AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Foundation course is an entry-level accounting qualification, ideal for anyone who is seeking an introduction to basic accounting principles and skills. This course will be delivered in College, either one day or one evening per week over 36 weeks.

Who is this course for?
This course is an excellent starting point for you if you are looking at changing or starting a new career. The AAT qualification gives you practical, internationally-recognised finance and accountancy skills.
This course is for adults aged 19+.and apprentices 16-18 years.
What you'll learn
This qualification will prepare you for junior and entry level accounting roles. It delivers a solid foundation in finance administration, covering areas such as double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing principles.
On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded an AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting. This internationally recognised AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification enables those working in accounting or those looking to pursue accountancy as a career to gain knowledge, practical experience and the all-important certification often sought by employers. You will also develop business communications and lifelong learning skills, applying what you learn on the course to the wider industry context.
- Business Environment
- Introduction to bookkeeping including double-entry bookkeeping as well as how to set up bookkeeping systems
- Principles of Bookkeeping Controls including control accounts, reconciliations and journals
- Principles of Costing
Course entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, students will be required to demonstrate a good level of Maths and English skills. Previous knowledge of accounting or a Level 1 Bookkeeping qualification would be advantageous but not essential.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
Classroom based learning – Lessons delivered weekly by an experienced AAT tutor.
Regular discussion with classmates will help to reinforce key points while also providing the additional support and motivation that comes from being part of a group.
Your tutor will provide regular guidance and feedback to ensure that you are assessment-ready for online computer- based exams. This course is assessed through computer-based exams and a synoptic assessment, which draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across the qualification.
Future career and study opportunities
On successful completion of this course, you can progress to higher levels of the AAT Accounting Qualification (Level 3 and then on to Level 4). Under the National Skills Fund initiative, you might be eligible for a fully funded Level 3 course. Alternatively, you can apply for an advanced learner loan to cover the cost of your Level 3 study. Please ask a member of college staff for more information.
The skills and knowledge you will gain throughout this qualification will qualify you for roles including Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant, Credit Control Assistant or Purchase Ledger Clerk.
You will need to pay an annual AAT Membership fee of £172. Learners registering for the first time will pay a one-off administration fee of £50 as well as the membership fees.
