Games Design, Animation and VFX Level 2 City of Bristol College

This course is a UAL Diploma in Games design, Animation & VFX. 

This full-time, one-year creative media course will give you the opportunity to work on interesting and diverse projects whilst gaining a valid understanding of the subject. 

You will experiment with your ideas, and look at the work of media practitioners in a variety of disciplines such as visual FX, digital graphics, animation, web and game design. 

You will produce a final piece of work at the end to bring together everything that you have learnt. 

Many of our students go on to the Level 3 Games Design, Animation & VFX and then on to university or our Games Design, Animation and VFX Level 4 / Level 5.

Who is this course for?

This Games Design and Animation course is for young people aged 16-18 and adults aged 19 and over who are interested in digital art (2D, 3D), such as games design and animation, sound, visual effects. It’s appropriate for those possessing minimal experience within the subject area 

What you'll learn

On this course, you will learn basic and creative skills in digital media and research into a range of media practitioners. 

You will have the opportunity to work on a personal project and showcase your newly developed skills within the subject. 

The course will feature modules on game design, animation, 2D or 3D digital art and sound. We will help you to develop your English and Maths skills as well as your skills in digital media production. 

Course entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, including Maths and/or English or a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject plus GCSEs in Maths and/or English, or a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and/or English.

We will invite you to a Course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Some Level 2 Technical qualifications may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course. This may include having English or Maths at Grade 4

How is the course delivered and assessed?

Your work will be assessed through written and practical means. You will present the work in folders, digital blogs and in different practical formats. You will be assessed on your development and outcomes. Regular portfolio assessment throughout the year, by which you will always know how you are progressing on the course and given a number of opportunities to improve your performance.

There are two externally assessed units as part of this course, which are undertaken in a controlled environment.

Future career and study opportunities

After successfully completing this course, you can move on to a range of subject areas. 

The most common progression from the Level 2 Diploma is onto one of our creative Level 3 programmes such as Games Design, Animation and VFX, Graphic Design and Photography. 

After our Level 3 programmes, a typical pathway is university or Games design, Animation and VFX HNC / HND – our popular Level 4 and Level 5 programmes. 

Additional costs

The only requirement we ask is for you to bring in a USB headset, but if you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
