General Food and Beverage Service Level 2 City of Bristol College

This stand-alone, one-year, full-time course will give you specialist food and beverage service skills and knowledge. It will prepare you for work success in a range of settings from restaurants and cafes to hotels.

Who is it for?

This course is for young people aged 16-18 who are interested in learning the skills necessary to work in the front of house section of restaurants and other catering establishments.

What you'll learn

You will learn the different range of skills required for a range of job roles within the front of house, such as bartender, barista and other service roles. You will be doing employer engaged activities and masterclasses as well as gaining first-hand experience in the restaurant and at some major events around the city such as the BBC Food Farming Awards and the Mayor’s Dinner. During this course, you will be encouraged to hone your customer service skills and refine your knowledge about wines, beers and spirits to meet customer needs and be able to advise and plan layouts for different meetings and events.

Entry requirements

To join this course, you will need to hold grade 4 (C) in English or equivalent. Students with grade 3/4 (C/D) in a range of other subjects will also be considered for this course. It is not essential but beneficial to have previous industry experience.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course delivers the knowledge and skills you need to begin or develop your career, through a mix of classroom learning and practical activities. The majority of your practical learning will take place in our professional and commercial training restaurant at College Green, where you will have opportunities to connect your technical learning with real-life by serving real customers. You will take part in a range of activities to extend and enhance your learning and develop important employability skills, such as team work, safe working practices and problem-solving techniques. You will be assessed through a mixture a practical and theory-based assessments throughout the year.

Future career and study opportunities

After completing this course, you could extend your professional training and career prospects further by progressing to a higher-level or specialist hospitality course, or you could seek an apprenticeship. You may prefer to go directly into employment, typically in roles such as waiting staff, bar staff, host or hostess or barista. You could work in a wide variety of establishments where guests receive different dining experiences, for example, independent, high street or fine dining restaurants; large hotel chains or independent, boutique or country house hotels.

Additional costs

You will be required to purchase front of house uniform, which costs approximately £60. If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
