Who is this course for?

This course is for students who wish to extend their knowledge of animal management with a focus on conservation, ecology, the countryside and land management. The units you will study are designed to lay the foundations of learning by providing a broad introduction to animal conservation and countryside management. This course will help you develop and strengthen core skills to prepare you to study specialist subjects at Level 5 or to enter employment.

What you'll learn

You will gain a wide range of animal conservation and countryside management knowledge linked to practical skills gained through research, independent study, directed study and workplace scenarios.

Alongside your academic learning, you will be encouraged to develop transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in Higher Education and in the workplace.

You will be required to complete modules worth 120 credits consisting of units in:

– Animal Health and Welfare
– Business and the Business Environment
– Managing a Successful Project
– Managing Environmental Resources, Principles of Ecology and their Applications
– British Wildlife
– Practical Conservation and Land Management

You will be expected to complete a minimum of 160 work experience hours within the animal conservation and countryside sector for completion of the course.

You are responsible for finding your own work placement, internship or volunteering opportunity which will improve your employability after you graduate.

Course entry requirements

To join a Level 4 Pearson Conservation and Countryside Management course, you typically need to have completed a Level 3 qualification in a related field such as Animal or Countryside management.

You will need to have at least 64 UCAS points from an animal or science related subject (equating to a low merit in a Technical qualification), or a T Level in Animal Care or Land Management. We also require for you to have achieved at least a Grade 4 in Maths GCSE.

You should have proof of your English language skills, either by a minimum of a Grade 4 in English language GCSE, or with proof of achieving an English as a second language qualification, either CEFR Level B2, PTE Academic 51, or IELTS at 5.5 (reading and writing).

If you have not taken a vocational qualification, you should have an Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one subject, supported by GCSE grades at 9 to 4 and/or A* to C (or equivalent) in subjects including maths and English.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

Assessments on the Higher National Diploma are designed around real-world vocational scenarios, helping you apply your learning in professional contexts.

Delivery is through practical demonstrations, fieldwork and surveys as well as classroom sessions, individual study and directed learning.

You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including practical fieldwork surveys, giving presentations, creating reports, academic posters, small-scale studies and projects, professional discussions and ‘open book’ tests.

Future career and study opportunities

After successful completion of the Level 4 course you could apply for a variety of roles including conservation officer, assistant countryside ranger, zookeeper, ecologist, wildlife or habitat manager, game keeping, environmental education or conservation charity roles.

You could also go on to study at a higher level towards a Level 5 BTEC qualification or a BSc (Hons) in Wildlife and Countryside Management, Environmental Conservation, Wildlife Conservation, Countryside and Land Management, or Wildlife and Environmental Conservation.
