Course entry requirements

It is desirable for candidates to have completed a level 3 CIPD qualification to progress to this course. If you do not have the Level 3 qualification you should have 2 years + experience of working in HR/People Practice and ideally have a degree level qualification. Candidates will also need to have GCSE English Language grade 4 or above (previously C or above) or an equivalent Level 2 English Language Qualification. Candidates with significant HR/People Practice experience, but lacking the required academic qualifications, will also be considered.

Prospective learners whose first language is not English must demonstrate a high standard of both spoken and written English to register onto a CIPD qualification. Acceptable assessment tools of assessing the English Language ability of prospective learners are detailed below. All assessments must have been taken within the last two years.

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Foundation level programmes – a score of 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each category.
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet based test – Foundation level programmes – a score of 79 overall with a minimum of 17 in each category.
• Pearson’s Test of English – Foundation level programmes – a score of 54 overall with a minimum of 51 in each category.

You are required to join the CIPD as a student member at the beginning of the course and remain in membership throughout the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is studied on a modular basis and taught by lectures, seminars, workshops and the occasional guest speakers and industry case studies while supported by Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment.

The course is assessed internally via coursework; there are no examinations. Candidates are also required to maintain a continuous professional development record throughout the course.

Future career and study opportunities

You will gain relevant experience to work in roles such as HR Business Partner or Manager, People Analyst, Employee Relations Manager or Diversity and Inclusion Specialist.

You may wish to progress onto the CIPD Level 7 course. As your CIPD qualifications will equip you with the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for, this will enhance your career prospects and increase your earning potential. Independent research reveals that individuals with professional qualifications stand to earn £81,000 in additional earning over a lifetime (CCPMO Economic Impact Report, December 2008).

Additional costs

As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery.

There are CIPD registration and subscription fees that are not included in the College course fees shown and these have to be paid direct by you to the CIPD. If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary or reduced rates from CIPD.
