Course overviewInformation Technology Level 1 City of Bristol College
Learn the fundamentals of information technology.
This one-year course studied across 9 hours per week, provides an introduction to information technology to help you develop the skills you will need to progress onto a Level 2 course, an Apprenticeship or employment within the IT sector.
You will complete a Level 1 BTEC Certificate in Information Technology and a Level 1 BTEC Certificate in Personal and Social Development as part of this course. In addition, you will also take English and Maths Functional Skills qualifications.

If you’re a school leaver and interested in Information Technology, this course is an ideal stepping stone towards achieving your ambition.
What you'll learn
Throughout the course, you will develop your personal and employability skills and complete practical assignments.
You will complete the following vocational units:
- Being organised
- Developing a personal progression plan
- Using digital communication technologies
- Solving technical IT problems
- Creating a website
You will develop your employment skills by completing a BTEC Personal and Social Development qualification as part of the course, and also undertake volunteering or work experience. You will also take an English and Maths Functional Skills qualification at the right level for you.
Course entry requirements
The entry requirements for Level 1 are:
- 2 GCSEs Grade 2 (E) including Maths or English
- Entry 3 Maths and English Functional Skills
We can also consider successful completion of any Entry 3 or another Level 1 vocational qualification.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will be assessed in a variety of ways to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills throughout the year. You will also complete an English and Maths assessment/exam.
Future career and study opportunities
Next steps upon successful completion could be progression onto a Level 2 course, an Apprenticeship or employment.
The course is free to anyone between the age of 16-18 years of age.
As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery.
Many courses offer learning opportunities that you may need to pay for. This may include things like study visits and visiting speakers. We will let you know in advance if there will be additional costs.
If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
To keep everyone safe, we’ve reduced the number of people in our buildings at one time. Most of our courses include sessions taught at the college supported by online learning.
