Installation and Maintenance Electrician Level 3 Apprenticeship City of Bristol College

The scope of an electrician’s work encompasses using engineering knowledge and understanding to apply technical and practical skills. They contribute to the design, development, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of products, equipment, processes, of electric systems or services.

Electrical equipment and systems may include switchboards, motors, cables, fuses, thermal relays, protective devices, heating, lighting, air conditioning and metering equipment as well as property and life safety installations and renewable energy technologies plus the installation and maintenance of electrical connections of new and emerging technologies supporting low carbon targets.

The new technologies will include enhanced connectivity, green and renewable technologies including heating and cooling technologies, using where appropriate, modern methods of construction including offsite and prefabricated components.

Who is this course for?

If you have a keen interest in electrical installation and would like to learn a highly skilled trade, then this Electrical Apprenticeship may be the right course for you. To join the Electrical Apprenticeship course you should be employed or have a current offer of employment in the electrical installation sector.

When undertaking this Electrical Apprenticeship, you will study a mixture of both work-based learning and training at College. You will also undertake an endpoint assessment (EPA) to complete your competency in Electrical Installation.

Your employer will pay the minimum apprenticeship wage while you are learning your trade.

What you'll learn

This Electrical Apprenticeship course will teach you the knowledge and practical skills to become a trained electrician. You will learn the fundamentals of electrical installation.

Course entry requirements

Apprentices will be required to have or achieve Level 2 in English and Maths by the end of their apprenticeship if they do not already have a GCSE Grade 1 – 5/A-C in both subjects. Apprentices should be able to demonstrate through initial assessment that they are working at Level 2.

The duration of the apprenticeship is determined by a number of different factors such as experience and prior learning. The minimum time of an apprenticeship is 12 months with the maximum being identified on an individual basis.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The first three years you’ll be attending college on a day release basis. This will give you knowledge and skills to support your workplace learning. You will also work on your NVQ portfolio.

The final year is entirely in the workplace. You will complete your portfolio and prepare for the AM2 endpoint assessment.

You will be assessed in a number of different ways and will receive regular feedback to help you grow and develop. Some of the ways in which we will measure your success and competence will be: attendance, portfolio work, exams and online and practical assessments.

Future career and study opportunities

On successful completion of the Electrical Apprenticeship you could obtain employment in the ever-growing electrical industry. Electricians are well-respected and can expect to earn a decent wage, with good career prospects.

Once you have completed your Advanced Apprenticeship you can register with the Joint Industrial Board (JIB), which will allow you to work on most construction sites.

Additional costs

As a City of Bristol College apprentice, you may incur additional costs on your apprenticeship. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery, and for some apprenticeships you may need to purchase specialist equipment.
