Who is this course for?
The course is for people who want to improve their understanding of counselling skills.
It is a 30-hour course for adults aged 18 and over who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of counselling and want a taste of counselling concepts and methods.
This award does not provide students with a professional qualification to practice as a counsellor.
What you'll learn
This course covers a range of topics which are integrated into the programme. This includes basic counselling skills, reflective learning and the three main theoretical roots of counselling.
This course will enable you to identify and practice initial counselling skills and understand the first steps in counselling theory.
Course entry requirements
You will need good communication skills including the ability to write at Level 2 standard.
To join this course, you will learn skills and theories which will reflect upon your own life. The work can feel personal and revealing so we look for someone who is reasonably emotionally robust.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
The course is delivered through experiential group work and classroom-based activities.
This course will be assessed through a written learning statement. You will also have a 10-minute practice skills assessment.
Future career and study opportunities
After completing this course, you may progress onto the AIM Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or the Foundation Degree in Counselling.
Alternatively, you may opt to complete an apprenticeship or enter employment.
