A short taster course designed to teach you information on Deaf awareness and some basic British Sign Language signs.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone who is interested in learning British Sign Language and wants to go on a taster course before committing to our BSL Level 1 course.
What you'll learn
You will learn about Deaf awareness, Deaf culture, clues that someone may be deaf and why it’s sometimes hard to lipread.
You will also learn some British Sign Language signs in order to greet people, fingerspell names and take part in small talk on the weather.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
This course is assessed by observing your answers and signs during discussions and games.
Future career and study opportunities
After completing this course, you may want to progress on to our British Sign Language Level 1 course, where you will gain a qualification and learn a range of signs to be able to take part in basic conversations.
Once you’ve completed Level 1, you could progress to British Sign Language Level 2, where you will develop your competence in BSL to be able to hold a longer conversation and improve your understanding of BSL grammar.
Long-term career choices could include working with the deaf as a communication support worker, or as an interpreter.
