Light Vehicle in Maintenance and Repair Level 1 City of Bristol CollegeA full-time, one-year light vehicle course in Bristol.
This course is a great first step for school leavers who want to be mechanics or vehicle technicians.
The course includes practical and theory lessons. You’ll develop your vehicle maintenance skills in specialist motor vehicle facilities.
You can study this course at our Motor Vehicle Technology Centre at Parkway or South Bristol Skills Academy (SBSA).

Who is this course for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18 who want to gain employment in the Motor Vehicle industry.
It will provide you with the knowledge required to perform basic maintenance checks, adjustments and component replacement on light vehicles.
What you'll learn
During this course, you will gain knowledge about the different tools, equipment and materials for vehicle maintenance.
Modules will include:
- engine liquid cooling and lubrication systems
- vehicle braking systems components and maintenance
- routine vehicle maintenance processes and procedures on vehicles
- vehicle wheels and tyres construction and maintenance.
You will be expected to complete 30 hours of work experience.
You will take an English and Maths Functional Skills qualification at the right level for you. If you achieve a Grade 3 for GCSE English or Maths at school you will undertake a resit in these subjects.
Course entry requirements
Our entry requirements for Level 1 are:
- Three GCSEs Grade 2 (E) including maths, science and English language
or
- Entry 3 Maths and English Functional Skills
We can also consider successful completion of any Entry 3 or another Level 1 vocational qualification.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
This course is assessed through the verbal questioning, observed tasks and written coursework.
Future career and study opportunities
After successfully completing this course you can opt to complete a Level 1 Diploma in Maintenance and Repair, a Level 2 Certificate in Maintenance and Repair or an apprenticeship in light and heavy vehicles.
Additional costs
You will need to provide suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) which includes boots, overalls and work gloves for use in the College workshop.
If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
