Make Up and Hair Level 1 (Pathway 4) City of Bristol CollegeThis one-year, full-time Level 1 Make Up and Hair qualification will help you build the foundations to begin an exciting career.
You will learn all about the requirements for working in the Beauty industry and its exciting opportunities. You will work in our modern college salons to practice your skills in a realistic environment.
You will develop the knowledge and skills you need for the next level of learning, employment or an apprenticeship.

Who is this course for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18.
If you have a passion for working with people and you are keen to develop your Make up and Hairstyling skills then this is the course for you.
What you'll learn
This Level 1 course will give you basic knowledge, skills and experience in beauty. You will also build your confidence and your communication skills when working with clients.
You will learn about the make-up and hairdressing industry and gain your Level 1 Make-up qualification. This will include:
- Health and safety in the salon/make-up studio
- How to present yourself professionally to meet industry requirements
- Working with others in the hair and beauty industry
- Introduction to skincare
- Basic make-up application
- Themed face painting
- Styling women’s hair
- Plaiting and twisting hair
Students are expected to have all treatments performed on them by other students, and to model other students’ work.
Course entry requirements
Three GCSEs at Grade 2 which must include maths and English or Functional Skills in English and maths at Level 1.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
This course is delivered in modern salons and classrooms.
You will have practical workshops as well as work in our realistic college salons which are open to the public for your Beauty sessions. During these sessions you will develop your Beauty skills and be assessed working on clients.
You will also have theory lessons where you will gain the required knowledge and understanding and will demonstrate this knowledge through a mix of online assessment and assignment work.
Future career and study opportunities
This qualification will enable you to progress to a Level Full time 2 Hair and Media Make up or a Level 2 Full time Hairdressing or a Level 2 Full time Beauty Qualification
With these qualifications you can gain employment in a Hairdressing salon, Beauty salon, or you can be self-employed Make up Artist
You could also progress to a level 3 Full time course in your chosen sector.
Additional costs
You will be required to purchase a Hair and make up kit and a uniform at a total cost of approximately £190.
If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery.
