Course overviewMedia Make-Up and Hair Artistry Level 2 City of Bristol College
This is a full-time, one-year course which is accredited by City & Guilds.
You will gain the skills required to be able to work as a freelance makeup artist or retail artist specialising in fashion, photographic and editorial makeup.
Who is this course for?
This course is for school leavers with a keen interest make-up for photography, fashion and occasions.
What you'll learn
The make-up industry is ever-growing and is worth billions of pounds and is only gaining momentum thanks to the support and attention from social media channels and the press. This course will set you up with the skills required to be a professional, freelance makeup artist.
You will gain industry knowledge and experience through hands-on classes in a specialised make-up studio both at SBSA and at our brand-new facility at College Green.
You will learn about the basic principles of health and safety and how to correctly care for and store makeup as well as the basic physiology and anatomy of the human skin and the best products suited to different types of skin.
Through this course, areas you will study include: photographic make-up and being able to contour to suit different lighting, body art such as pieces suitable for festivals and Avant-Garde events. Styling hair using multiple techniques such as for weddings and events.
Course entry requirements
To join this course, you must have a Grade 3 (D) in English or Functional Skills Level 1 or equivalent.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will be required to wear all black clothing including black, closed in shoes. Clothing must not have any logos or slogans on them and ripped jeans are not permitted. You will receive a hoodie with ‘Make-up Artist’ on the back as a uniform. You will have two-and-a-half days a week of practical sessions as well as Maths and English where applicable. Theory is integrated into the practical sessions.
You will be assessed through a range of practical make-up and hair assessments, some written assignments and some online tests. You will finish the course with a full portfolio of work which will assist in your future steps.
Future career and study opportunities
When you complete this course you can work as a freelance makeup artist or work for high-street make-up counters. You can also progress to the college’s Level 3 Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-up Artistry.
You will need to purchase a college uniform for this course which costs £25 as well as a make-up kit which costs approximately £600.
If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
To keep everyone safe, we’ve reduced the number of people in our buildings at one time. Most of our courses include sessions taught at the college supported by online learning.
