This course is designed to develop essential knowledge in understanding mental health, mental illness and the risks associated with mental health conditions.

On developing an awareness of mental health, you will be able to support individuals with mental health conditions through fitness and referral systems.

Who is this course for?

Those who wish to expand their knowledge in mental health awareness through fitness and want to be able to offer a more in-depth service to their clients.

What you'll learn

You will gain an understanding of mental health and mental illnesses and know how to support them, through learning about:

– Differentiating between mental health and mental ill health
– Identifying the prevalence of mental health conditions
– Understanding factors contributing to mental health
– Knowing how to support mental health
– How physical activity can impact mental health

Course entry requirements

18 years old and above, with a Level 2 in Health and Fitness.

Previous knowledge of mental health and exercise is an advantage.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

A mix of face-to-face learning one evening a week plus home study.

Assessing is completed via manual coursework and online assessments.

Future career and study opportunities

This qualification can lead to further training at the same and/or higher levels in a range of related disciplines. For example, YMCA Level 4 Certificate in Weight Management for Individuals with Obesity, Diabetes Mellitus and/or Metabolic Syndrome.
