Who is this course for?
This course is for young people aged 16-18, however you will need to have obtained a YMCA level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification before you can be eligible to be offered a place on this course.
Do you love exercise? Can you see yourself helping people to reach their fitness goals to achieve an active and healthy lifestyle? If so, this course will help you turn your enthusiasm for health and fitness into an enjoyable and rewarding career.
What you'll learn
You will develop a thorough understanding of how to build and maintain health and fitness through exercise and a healthy lifestyle. You will learn how the body works and about the principles of nutrition, and you will learn how to incorporate this knowledge into an exercise and activity programme to help clients achieve their goals. You will learn how to design, deliver and adapt personal training programmes for adults or all ages and abilities, using a variety of exercise and physical activities. You will also understand how to communicate with clients effectively and how to motivate them to adhere to a personalised exercise programme. If you have not yet gained a grade 4 (C) in GCSE English or Maths, you will study these subjects at the right level for you, either as Functional Skills qualifications or as GCSE resits, if you already have a grade 3 (D).
Course entry requirements
To join this course you need to have achieved the Level 2 Health and Fitness Diploma or Level 2 Fitness Instructor Certificate.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will be taught by highly qualified teachers who have a wealth of industry experience and specialist knowledge. Your time will be split between classroom learning and practical activities in the gym and sports centre, where you will put your knowledge into practice, by developing and evaluating training programmes. You will be continuously assessed throughout the course by a mix of coursework, practical assignments and written tests, with a multiple-choice online exam at the end of the course. If you are studying English and Maths, these subjects will be assessed through tests and exams.
Future career and study opportunities
This is a nationally-recognised professional qualification which will enable you to work as a personal trainer. You might work for a gym, sports club or leisure venue or you might prefer to be self-employed. You could also progress to university to study Sports Science or you could gain further specialist qualifications within the health and fitness industry, for example in yoga or pilates.
You will need to buy sports clothing and uniform and contribute to the costs of educational trips – this will be approximately £250 for the year. If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
