Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Level 1 City of Bristol College

This course is designed to introduce you to working in social care. If you are at the beginning of your career in care, this is an excellent course that supports your training. The course has established links with employers to provide you with up-to-date, industry-approved training.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for people who wish to pursue a career in care.

You need a good level of literacy and to be able to complete assignments at home.

What you'll learn

Discussion and evaluation forms a significant part of the course.

There are 5 units to achieve:

  • Introduction to the adult social care sector
  • Introduction to the values and principles of adult social care
  • Awareness of the skills and attitudes needed to work in adult social care
  • Awareness of communication in adult social care
  • Awareness of the roles and responsibilities of the adult social care worker

We start by understanding the adult social care sector. We cover:

  • Professional standards and expectations of the industry.
  • Understanding the vales of care and the challenges that working in the sector will present.
  • The complications and difficulties of communication.
  • The wide range of employment opportunities and career pathways that are available in this sector.

The course aims to include guest speakers from industry.

Course entry requirements

Literacy competency at Level 1 is essential.

A phone interview with the lecturer, Becca Lloyd MA, is required before enrolment.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is classroom-based, and regular discussion with classmates as a community group will form a significant part of the course.

You will expected to achieve the set assignments either in class or at home. There will be homework every session.

Your lecturer will support you, provide regular guidance and discuss your work with you.

There are no exams: you will build a paper-based folder of evidence as the course progresses that will be assessed.

This is not a graded qualification (pass/fail).

Future career and study opportunities

Once you have completed this course, you could progress onto higher-level qualifications in adult social care, and ultimately to a career in the industry.
