Teaching Assistant Level 3 Apprenticeship City of Bristol CollegeThis occupation is found in primary, secondary, special schools, alternative provision, and further education institutions such as sixth forms and colleges. Teaching Assistants work across all age ranges, supporting all learners.
The broad purpose of the occupation is to support the class teacher to enhance learners’ progress and development either in groups or individually. Teaching Assistants ensure that learners understand their work, know their learning objectives, and display positive learning behaviours in order to make progress. They deliver individual and small group teaching and apply a range of strategies to support learners of different abilities under the professional direction and supervision of a qualified teacher. Teaching Assistants may support learners with special educational needs and disabilities and learners with social, emotional, and mental health vulnerabilities.
In their daily work, an employee in this occupation may interact with all learners. This includes but is not limited to high attaining, SEND, EAL, and disadvantaged learners. Teaching Assistants will also work in partnership with teachers and other professionals within the school and education system, as well as with learners’ parents or carers.

What you'll learn
During the Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship:
- You will support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning
- You will continue to work within the sector while gaining further knowledge and skills
- You will work with your workplace college trainer and employer to gain the knowledge and skills ready for your end-point assessment
- You will use the knowledge and skills from your standard to demonstrate to your end-point assessor how these skills are put into practice in the workplace
- You will work towards Functional skills in English and Maths at Level 2, if not already achieved
Course entry requirements
Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 in English and Maths by the end of their apprenticeship if they do not already have a GCSE Grade 1 – 5/A-C in both subjects. Apprentices should be able to demonstrate through initial assessment that they are working at level 2.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
Online or Face to face in the workplace
The duration of the apprenticeship is determined by a number of different factors such as experience and prior learning. The minimum time of an apprenticeship is 12 months with the maximum being identified on an individual basis.
Future career and study opportunities
When you complete the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, it may be possible to progress into employment in the education sector as a HLTA or Higher Education.
