A one-year Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-Up Artistry Level 3 course for adults.

The course focuses on special effects, prosthetics and characterisation make-up which is commonly used in Hollywood to bring to life mythical and fantasy creatures.

Who is this course for?

This course is for people aged 19+ who have completed either Level 2 Media Make-up and Hair Artistry or a Fashion and Photographic Make-up course.

What you'll learn

The make-up industry is ever-growing and is worth billions of pounds and is only gaining momentum thanks to the support and attention from social media channels and the press. The film industry pumps millions of pounds into its hair and make-up departments each year to ensure the very best effects come across on the silver screen.

You will gain industry knowledge and experience through hands-on classes in a specialised make-up studio at College Green Centre. You will learn about the basic principles of health and safety and how to correctly care for and store makeup and prosthetics as well as the basic physiology and anatomy of the human skin and the best products suited to different types of skin.

Through this course, areas you will study include: prosthetic and bald-cap creation and application, special effects for TV, film and theatre, you will also learn how to construct facial hair such as beards and moustaches, full body painting for competition. You will also learn how to create Avant-Garde hairstyles and how to cut for continuity – making sure actors and actresses hair appears the same over long periods of filming.

Course entry requirements

To join this course, you must have either completed the Level 2 Media Make-up and Hair Artistry course or have some form of make-up training or portfolio to backup your application.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

You will be required to wear all black clothing including black, closed in shoes. Clothing must not have any logos or slogans on them and ripped jeans are not permitted. You will receive a hoodie with ‘Make-up Artist’ on the back as a uniform. You will have two-and-a-half days a week of practical sessions as well as Maths and English where applicable. Theory is integrated into the practical sessions.

You will complete a final, end-of-year synoptic assessment and a written theory exam. You will finish the course with a full portfolio of work which will assist in your future steps.

Future career and study opportunities

You can get between 24-84 UCAS points depending on your final grade, using this you can move on to higher education where you can grow your depth of knowledge around media make-up. You can move on to work in the TV and film industry or choose to progress as a freelancer or in salons and make-up studios.

Additional costs

You will need to purchase a college uniform for this course which costs £25 as well as a make-up kit which costs approximately £650. If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner
Support Funding Bursary.
