An A Level student with a passion for sustainability and green living has set her sights on moving to California after completing her postgraduate degree as she seeks the next step on her career journey.
Rita de Campos e Sequeira studied Business, English Language and Film Studies A Levels at City of Bristol College from 2016 to 2018 and said the support she received at the college was ‘unbelievable’ after she moved from Portugal.
Rita studied International Business Management at one of our university partners, UWE Bristol, and finished her studies with a 2:1. She is now in the process of completing her postgraduate degree in Sustainable Development in Practice at the same university.
Rita said: “Overall, I really enjoyed my time at City of Bristol College. This was mainly due to the teachers I had. The support that Suzanne Williams, Nicola Rice, Kathryn White and Dan Clark provided was unbelievable. These were people who greatly enjoyed their jobs and always tried to make sure their students were successful.
“Whenever I had any sort of issue, they were there to help me. Considering English is not my native language and I have just moved to the UK when I started studying at College, their input assured me I could actually do it. They also made sure I never felt out of place.”
Rita had her first experience of learning in English when she came to the College and she said having the support of her teachers, made the difference to prepare her for further study. She went as far to say she ‘did not think I would have been able to complete my undergraduate degree as well as I did’ without their help. Lecturer Dan Clark even helped Rita complete her university applications and helped her into a programme to further her studies.
Now looking ahead to a new adventure, the 23-year-old plans to move to the west coast of the United States to ‘do something meaningful’ with her qualification.
She added: “I will either further my education or find a place to work where I will be able to increase my capital while also helping the planet by working closely with companies trying to put sustainability practices in place.
“I aspire to do something meaningful. I want to help ensure this planet is habitable for many more years and if I can find a career which helps me do so, I will be very happy. However, I also have interests in other areas and I could end up pursuing that. So, we shall see!”
Opting to study at City of Bristol College was an easy decision for Rita, who was attracted to the central location of the College Green Centre as well as the positive reputation of the College.
But overall, she could not stop praising the lecturers who had supported her through her journey, especially during times of stress when they were ‘supportive by ensuring my mental health was stable enough to continue studying at the College’.
She said: “I could not have asked to be surrounded by better people.”
