Make It China cooking competition launches at City Restaurant

City of Bristol College was pleased to welcome Dennis Hu and his colleagues from Make It China to our College Green City Restaurant today for the launch of our collaborative Chinese cooking competition.

Students entering the competition will cook fried pork with chilli, a famously spicy dish from the province of Hunan. The budding chef who cooks the best dish for the five judges will win a trip to Changsha, the capital of Hunan, to meet an experienced Chinese chef and learn about cooking the iconic dish from them.

Dennis Hu said “We all enjoy eating Chinese food, but to learn how to cook it from Chinese people in China is a unique opportunity. Fried pork with chilli perfectly represents the Xiang cuisine of the Hunan province, and now we want to see these students use their creativity to bring something new to this dish that’s been cooked by Chinese chefs for hundreds of years.

Cathy Bowstead, Director of Foundation Learning and Enrichment, said “Broadening horizons is so important to us at the College, both to promote equality, diversity and inclusion and to enrich what we teach our students with real-world experiences. The opportunity to go to China and learn about Chinese cooking there is a very special prize, and I am so proud that one of our students will be chosen for that opportunity.”

The cooking competition will take place on Monday 13 June and will be livestreamed on social media.
