City of Bristol College is proud to announce the launch of a brand-new student award created in honour of John Savage, a long-serving and highly respected business leader in the region.
The Business West – John Savage Award for ‘Improved Opportunity’ has been established by Phil Smith, Chair of Governors at City of Bristol College and Managing Director of Business West, as a leaving tribute to John Savage upon his retirement as Board Director of Business West.
John Savage, who began his career facing significant barriers, went on to become a driving force for change in Bristol over four decades. He was the Executive lead for the formation of the Bristol Initiative 40 years ago and played a pivotal role in tackling deprivation and championing regeneration across the city.
His work helped deliver landmark projects including the Bristol Harbourside, the building of The Matthew, Cabot Circus and the creation of Destination Bristol (later Visit West).
The annual award will be presented to one City of Bristol College student who has shown determination, ambition and commitment to bettering themselves through education and training.
The recipient will receive £1,000 worth of support tailored to their individual needs, such as a laptop, specialist equipment or financial assistance, as well as invaluable mentoring from Business West’s expert business advisors and access to its extensive employer networks.
The award is truly about giving a helping hand to a student who is working hard to succeed but could benefit from additional support. John’s legacy embodies improving opportunities for others and both City of Bristol College and Business West are proud to honour him in this way.
Nominations are now open for colleagues to put forward students who would benefit most from the award. Colleagues are invited to detail what support would make the greatest difference to their nominee in achieving their educational and career goals.
The winner will be selected under the direction of Tracey Hemmings, Learning Support Fund and Bursary Manager, who will also oversee how the financial element is allocated to best support the student’s learning.
The award will be formally presented at a prestigious awards ceremony, with the financial support being provided at the end of the first term.
Nominations should be submitted to Tracey Hemmings by 1 December via tracey.hemmings@cityofbristol.ac.uk .
