This is an inclusive course for students wishing to work on their independent living skills and to prepare them for future college courses. This course is for students at Pre-entry and Entry level.

The course usually runs over three or four days. Students will always be given a student-friendly timetable at induction.

During a typical college day, you will always get a rest break, as well as a lunch break, where you will have the option to sit with your group, chat with others, have some quiet time in a breakout area, or use the computers or laptops in the Study Centre.

Class sizes are smaller (usually around 8 learners in total), and there will always be a Learning Assistant available to support students in the classroom and during break times. Most sessions are classroom-based, but students will get lots of opportunities to go off-site during the year, depending on the subject and projects they are taking part in. Find out more about Additional Learning Support (ALS) at City of Bristol College.

The course is suitable for young adults (16-24) with an EHCP, who have an additional learning need and or disability and want to develop their life skills and employability skills, at a pace and level that is individual to them.

Life Skills and Community Skills This will be a chance to go out into the community and practise your bus travel, meeting people in the community, visiting new places, shopping skills, following directions, and personal safety.

Work Skills/Employability Skills In these sessions, you will learn the skills needed to get a job, such as how to deliver good customer service, personal hygiene, and safety in the workplace; allowing you to discover what your skills and qualities are.

Vocational tasters Tasters such as Cookery, Retail, World Studies, and Working with People.

Tutorial time This is a chance to learn about how to be a good member of society and what your rights and responsibilities are. Tutorial sessions will also be a chance to work on individual goals and progression routes, ensuring that you are working towards your EHCP outcomes.

Students will need to be assessed through a meeting

to ensure the college can meet the individual needs of the student.

Progression routes after Progression Into Independence include Bridge to Vocational and Pathways to Employment (PTE).

As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery.

If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.

How to apply?
