Learn the basics of counselling skills and theory on this part-time, 17-week course for adults aged 19 and over.

You will develop your listening and communication skills, explore different counselling approaches and consider the importance of self-development.

This introductory course is designed to help you explore counselling skills and theory before progressing to further counselling training. If you would like to become a qualified counsellor, you will need to continue your studies beyond this course.

Find out more about our A Level pathways and how to apply

This course is for adults who are interested in counselling theory and practice and want to develop their listening, communication and self-awareness skills.

It is ideal if you are considering a career in counselling and want to explore what being a counsellor involves before progressing to further training. It may also suit you if you want to develop counselling skills that complement your current career or studies.

You will learn about:

  • Counselling skills and how to use them effectively
  • Different approaches and theories in counselling
  • Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
  • The importance of personal development and self-awareness

You will need good communication skills, including the ability to write at Level 2 standard and work collaboratively with others.

As part of the course, you will learn and practise counselling skills and theories that may encourage you to reflect on your own life and experiences. Some of this work can feel personal or revealing, so you should be prepared to engage with this type of learning and have the emotional resilience to manage it.

Upon successful completion of this course, you could progress to the Counselling Level 3 course and continue your training towards a career in counselling.

You may also be able to progress to our Foundation Degree in Counselling if you have enough UCAS points from other Level 3 qualifications and experience of using counselling-type skills in a work or voluntary role.

As a City of Bristol College student, you may have additional costs associated with attending your course, such as travel and stationery.

If you are on a limited income, you may be able to get help with some course-related costs through our Learner Support Funding Bursary.

How to apply?

Your admissions journey will follow a number of straightforward steps and will likely follow a similar format to the steps outlined on our ‘How to Apply‘ page.

For 16-18 courses, places will be offered for a specific course of study at City of Bristol College, subject to the applicant meeting all course entry criteria.
