Engineering Maintenance Technicians (EMTs) work in a wide range of industries that use plant, machinery, equipment, systems, and fixtures. This includes energy, leisure and entertainment, manufacturing, processing, and utilities companies. Working environments vary across these industries.

This Level 3 Apprenticeship is available in two options:

  • Engineering Maintenance Technician (EMT) Single Discipline Level 3
  • Engineering Maintenance Technician (EMT) Dual Discipline Level 3

Both pathways are core-and-options apprenticeships, meaning there are core and optional modules. An apprentice must be trained and assessed against the core modules, and one optional.

Single Discipline options include:

  • Electrical engineering maintenance technician
  • Control and instrumentation engineering maintenance technician
  • Mechanical engineering maintenance technician

-Electrical: work focuses on electrical aspects of plant, equipment, and systems, such as motors, single-phase and three-phase power supplies, and low or high-voltage electrical distribution.

  • Control and instrumentation: work focuses on control and instrumentation aspects, such as programmable logic controllers, flow metres, heat exchangers, and safety controls.
  • Mechanical: work focuses on mechanical aspects, such as actuators, fans, pumps, valves, gearboxes, and pipework.

Dual Discipline options include:

  • Electrical and control and instrumentation technician
  • Electrical and mechanical maintenance technician

Across both pathways, Engineering Maintenance Technicians are responsible for maintaining plant and equipment to optimise operation. This involves carrying out planned and preventative maintenance to prevent issues occurring and reactive maintenance when problems occur — for example, responding to breakdowns.

Technicians must prepare for and accept jobs, complete work safely to required standards, close the job, and complete accurate work records. They also contribute to continuous improvement activities. Depending on the task, work may be completed as part of a team or independently.

This course is for people who are employed as a Level 3 Apprentice in an engineering role. You can praise apprenticeships vacancies on the government website.

This course will give you the technical and practical skills required to work within the area of engineering that relates to your apprenticeship. You must be prepared to commit at least three years to the course and maintain motivation throughout. You will need to be capable of using your own initiative.

You will gain a good foundation of skills and knowledge in the area of engineering that relates to your apprenticeship.

The duration of the apprenticeship is determined by a number of different factors such as experience and prior learning. The minimum time of an apprenticeship is 12 months with the maximum being identified on an individual basis.

Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 in English and Maths by the end of their apprenticeship if they do not already have a GCSE Grade 1 – 9 in both subjects.
