CAD: Civil 3D City of Bristol College

Start to use Autodesk’s civil engineering road/infrastructure modeller.

This flexi-course, which you can start at any time, is our beginners’ course for Civil 3D. You will go from not being able to use Civil 3D to being able to produce your own 3D models and 2D technical drawings and 3D print from the 3D models you have created. You will be taught by an industry-experienced, Autodesk-Certified Instructor.

Who is this course for?

This course is for those in the construction industry needing an introduction to Autodesk’s Civil 3D wanting to take advantage of Civil 3D’s design functionality for Civil Engineering road and associated infrastructure projects.

What you'll learn

During this course, you will learn the essentials of how to use Civil 3D to produce 2D CAD drawings from the 3D models you will create. You will cover a range of subject areas including creating grading solutions, perform quantity take-off and using production tools. You will learn how to use the Civil 3D interface and how to create and edit land parcels and creating points and groups for surveys.

Course entry requirements

To join this course, you will need a suitable aptitude for 3D Civil Engineering / Surveying work and an enthusiasm for learning Civil 3D. Alongside this, a knowledge of Civil Engineering construction / design processes.

You do not need any previous CAD experience, but it helps, particularly if it’s in using AutoCAD.

You will need a working understanding of English and Maths and the ability to use Windows-based computers confidently.

Entry interview

You need to attend an interview – in person or by phone. Phone interviews can be arranged, as necessary; call 0117 3122703 or email CAD@cityofbristol.ac.uk.

If you want a college based, in-person interview, sessions are on Wednesdays at the College Green Centre, during term time, in room 6E22H, at 16:00.

You do not need to book, just sign in at reception and allow upwards of an hour, in case you visit us at a busy time. Other times can be arranged simply call, or email as above.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is a flexi-course which allows you to attend college as and when you can. Once enrolled, you can tailor your course timing to suit your needs. The course typically takes about 90 hours to complete, which must be done within a year of starting – how quickly is up to you.

At the end of the course you will create your own project. When successful, you will receive a College Certificate and an Autodesk ATC Certificate of Completion to confirm your achievement.

Future career and study opportunities

After successfully completing this course, you will be equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to use Civil 3D help you start your career. You will be able to start an open-ended journey into 3D modelling/BIM, apply up to date 3D modelling techniques in Civil Engineering or upskill and potentially progress within the workplace. You can progress onto other CAD courses on offer.

Enrolment on the course entitles you to download a free copy of Civil 3D, for educational purposes, from Autodesk. It is assumed you already have a suitable computer to use this on – if you can’t / don’t want to use the college’s CAD Windows computers, Mac computers can be used, please call / email for further information.
