Learn the essentials of SolidWorks on this flexible, self-paced course for beginners.

You will learn how to create 3D models and produce 2D technical drawings from your designs, using real-world projects to develop practical skills with this industry-standard engineering software. You can start the course at any time and have up to one year to complete it.

This course is for beginners who want to learn how to use SolidWorks to create 3D models and 2D technical drawings.

You do not need previous CAD experience. An interest in engineering, industrial or product design may be helpful, as may experience using other 3D CAD, CAE or CAM software.

You will learn how to use SolidWorks to create 3D models and 2D technical drawings, including:

  • Creating sketches and modelling 3D parts
  • Combining parts to create assemblies
  • Producing 2D technical drawings from your 3D models for production purposes

You do not need previous CAD experience to join this course.

You will need a working knowledge of English and Maths and be confident using Windows-based computers.

You will also need to attend an entry interview before enrolling on the course. Interviews can be arranged in person or by telephone.

In-person interviews take place on Wednesdays at 4pm during term time at the College Green Centre, in room 6E22H. You do not need to book an appointment; simply sign in at reception. Please allow up to an hour for your interview.

Telephone interviews and alternative interview times can be arranged by calling 0117 312 2703 or emailing CAD@cityofbristol.ac.uk.

On successful completion, you will have developed the essential skills to create 3D models and associated 2D technical drawings using SolidWorks. These skills can support progression into careers in engineering, design and other industries where 3D CAD skills are required.

You can also progress to our CAD: SolidWorks Intermediate course or explore other CAD software through courses in Inventor or Fusion 360.

There are no required additional costs beyond the course fee. Please contact us for information about the current course fee.

As part of your enrolment, you will be entitled to download a free educational copy of SolidWorks from Dassault Systèmes. You will need access to a suitable computer to use the software at home, although you can use the College's CAD computers if you prefer.

If you would like to use a Mac, please contact us for further information about compatibility and requirements.
