Find out more about our A Level pathways and how to apply

This course is for young people aged 16–18 who are interested in photography and want to develop their creative and technical skills. If you have had little experience with photography, this course provides the ideal starting point. You do not need to have any previous art qualifications to enrol.

We encourage our students to use recycled and up-cycled materials wherever possible for their coursework — such as used camera kits, props, and other resources — to promote sustainable creative practice.

You will study the fundamentals of photography and digital media. The course provides opportunities to develop your technical and creative skills through self-evaluation, practice, and review.

You will also explore sustainable approaches to photography and the responsible use of AI technology.

AI is used to support students in generating creative ideas and enhancing their projects.

If you have completed a Level 1 qualification: you must have achieved a Merit or above. If you have not completed Level 1: you will need a minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above (including English and/or Maths preferred).

A portfolio of work or a clear interest in photography is also required.

This course prepares you to study Photography at Level 3, after which you may progress into university, entry-level employment, or a media apprenticeship.

As a City of Bristol College student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, you may likely need to pay for travel and stationery.

Many courses offer learning opportunities that you may need to pay for. This may include things like study visits and visiting speakers. We will let you know in advance if there will be additional costs.

If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.

How to apply?

Your admissions journey will follow a number of straightforward steps and will likely follow a similar format to the steps outlined on our ‘How to Apply‘ page.

For 16-18 courses, places will be offered for a specific course of study at City of Bristol College, subject to the applicant meeting all course entry criteria.
