Craft Carpentry Level 3 Apprenticeship City of Bristol CollegeThis occupation is found in both the new build and refurbishment construction sector. The construction industry is central to creating the homes, schools, hospitals, energy and transport infrastructure society needs. There is a growing demand for carpenters and joiners to help meet the need for the transition to modern methods of construction, heritage projects and sustainability.
The broad purpose of the occupation is working with wood-based materials and associated products to create and install complex building components. This typically involves shaping and cutting materials and installing finished materials like complex or decorative components. All work needs to be carried out safely, using the appropriate tools and to the quality specified.
This occupation includes two different options and people will either work on a construction site as an Advanced Site Carpenter or in a workshop as an Advanced Architectural Joiner.
Advanced Site Carpenters work on building sites in the construction of domestic and commercial properties, preparing and installing complex and bespoke building components. They prepare, construct and erect irregular and complex roof structures.
Advanced Architectural Joiners are employed in a workshop to create complex building components by setting out, marking out and creating assembled products requiring advanced skilled work including the full range of woodworking machines. There will often be a need for refurbishment or repair work of bespoke pieces.

Who is this course for?
This course is designed for learners who are progressing from the Level 2 course in Site Carpentry and who have a keen interest to start a career within the field of carpentry.
What you'll learn
This apprenticeship will allow you to advance your skills and prepare you for the workplace. When undertaking an apprenticeship, you will study a mixture of both work-based learning and training at College.
You will also undertake an endpoint assessment (EPA) to complete your competency in Site Carpentry. Your employer will pay the minimum apprenticeship wage while you are learning your trade.
Course entry requirements
Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 in English and Maths by the end of their apprenticeship if they do not already have a GCSE Grade 1 – 5/A-C in both subjects.
Apprentices should be able to demonstrate through initial assessment that they are working at level 2.
The durtion of the apprenticeship is determined by a number of different factors such as experience and prior learning. The minimum time of an apprenticeship is 12 months with the maximum being identified on an individual basis.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will be assessed in a number of different ways and will receive regular feedback to help you grow and develop.
Some of the ways in which we will measure your success and competence will be: attendance and punctuality, professional knowledge, skills and behaviours, academic and workplace reviews, online and practical assessments.
Future career and study opportunities
On successful completion of the course you could obtain employment in the carpentry industry. You could also progress onto a site management course.
Additional costs
As a City of Bristol College apprentice, you may incur additional costs on your apprenticeship. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery, and for some apprenticeships you may need to purchase specialist equipment.
