Helping students to build up their confidence and being more independent in their lives, as part of their transition into adulthood and employment.

About the Travel Training Service:

The College’s Travel Training Service aims to meet the needs of young people with learning disabilities and autism. Travel Training is a crucial tool to enable Students’ independence skills and facilitating their transition into adulthood and employment.

Travel training helps people with road safety and awareness skills, how to plan a route, look at ways to stay safe when out and about while helping people building up their confidence to travel safely and independently.

Travel training makes a real difference in young people’s lives, empowering them with the skills and confidence to travel independently to access the community, to use public transport, public services and accessing opportunities such as education, employment, sport and leisure activities or visiting family and friends. It promotes inclusion and participation, enabling people to connect with others without having to rely on a lift or a taxi service.

It develops people’s skills and resources, improves their self-confidence and self-esteem, a sense of community belonging and social participation, promotes employability, and access to an income, enabling people to achieve their goals and to build their life project.

The training we provide covers topics such as how to keep safe when out and about, what to carry when out and about, how to cross the road safely, how to use the bus, what to do in scenarios of missing the bus, a bus broking down, having an accident, feeling unwell, being bullied or harassed.

The training sessions are structured and planned by the training coordinator and are delivered on a one-to-one basis by the training coordinator and the Travel Trainers, including training in road safety, road awareness, personal safety, route planning and communication.

What you’ll be responsible for/what we are looking for:

The role will involve delivering travel training to young people with learning disabilities and autism, helping students to travel safely, confidently and independently.

Your role will be:

  • To assist students to use a bus pass and to purchase bus tickets where necessary.
  • To assist students in planning a safe route should they wish to walk.
  • To ensure students know how to cross the road safely and how to use different crossings.

  • To be involved in the risk assessment and general administrative duties of the role. You will complete tasks such as continuous assessments of students’ progress using provided competences matrix.
  • To work either on a one-to-one or with a group of students.
  • To have a positive impact on students’ lives, enabling them to develop the confidence and to learn the skills to become independent travellers.
  • To support students to develop their confidence, communication and interpersonal skills, whilst facilitating young people’s own growth, inclusion and independence.
