Art and Design Level 1 City of Bristol College

This one-year, full-time course will introduce you to your chosen vocational sector and will help you develop the skills you will need to progress onto a Level 2 course, an Apprenticeship or employment. During this course you will have access to different Adobe Creative Cloud applications including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and you will complete a Level 1 BTEC Certificate in Art and Design and a Level 1 BTEC Award in Personal and Social Development.

Who is this course for?

This course is for young people aged 16-18 and for people who have a keen interest in Art and Design. This course acts as an ideal stepping stone towards achieving your ambitions in the industry.

What you'll learn

You will study a range of topics which will develop your personal skills. You will be tasked to complete assignments and create a portfolio of art work. You will complete a number of vocational units including: creating 2D art images, creating 3D objects and develop a personal progression plan. Your classes will be lead by teachers who are industry professionals in their own right who will help you develop your employability skills and urge you to complete volunteering and work experience. If you have not yet gained a grade 4 (C) in GCSE English or Maths, you will study these subjects alongside your course, either as Functional Skills qualifications, or GCSE resits if you already have a grade 3 (D).

Course entry requirements

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to tour our excellent facilities and ask any questions you may have.

You will be asked to provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

You will need 3 GCSEs at Grade 1 to Grade 3 including Maths and English, or a previous vocational qualification.

Some Level 1 qualifications in trade-based subjects may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is assessed in a variety of ways to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills throughout the year including assessments, written tests and practical work. You will complete an English and Maths assessment/exam.

Future career and study opportunities

You may be able to go directly into a career in the industry or join an Apprenticeship programme. Alternatively, you could extend your knowledge and skills by joining our Level 2 Art and Design course at the college.

Additional costs

The course is free to anyone aged 16-18. There is no formal kit list for consumables, but if you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
