Art and Design Level 1 City of Bristol College

This one-year, full-time course is an introduction to Art and Design, giving you the chance to explore a range of creative disciplines. You will develop your skills through drawing and painting, 3D design, and printmaking, as well as completing vocational units that prepare you for your next steps.

Throughout the course, you will also use digital technology to connect art with your own interests, such as gaming or fashion. Sessions are interactive and hands-on, encouraging you to experiment, celebrate your creativity, and develop unique ideas.

By the end of the course, you will gain a recognised qualification while building the skills and confidence to progress onto a Level 2 course, an Apprenticeship, or employment.

Who is this course for?

This course is for young people aged 16-18 and for people who have a keen interest in Art and Design. This course acts as an ideal stepping stone towards achieving your ambitions in the industry.

What you'll learn

You will study a range of creative subjects including drawing, painting, printmaking and 3D skills. Alongside this, you will learn how to get organised and develop a personal progression plan to support your next steps.

Course entry requirements

3 x GCSEs at grades 1 to 3 including Maths and English, or previous vocational qualification.However, if you don’t have any formal qualifications, don’t worry, simply let us know and we can assess you to ensure that you will be able to achieve well on the course.

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to tour our excellent facilities and ask any questions you may have.

You will be asked to provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is made up of five BTEC units, each assessed through assignments. These assessments are designed to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge across different projects and practical work.

Future career and study opportunities

You may be able to go directly into a career in the industry or join an Apprenticeship programme. Alternatively, you could extend your knowledge and skills by joining a level 2 course in the same subject area. 

Additional costs

You will need to provide some basic drawing and painting materials for your studies. There may also be small costs for local trips to support your learning.
