CAD: 3Ds Max City of Bristol College

Learn how to use 3ds Max.

You can start this flexi-course at any time. You will have one year to complete the course, coming when it suits you.

You will learn how to use Autodesk’s key 3D visualisation and animation package: 3ds Max. You will learn how to create, edit, materialise and render 3ds Max models. You will be taught under the guidance of an industry-experienced, Autodesk-Certified Instructor.

Who is this course for?

This course is for beginners using 3ds Max, looking to be able to use 3ds Max for 3D visualisation or animation. These beginners may typically be skilled in the use of other 3D CAD packages and looking to be able to create high-end 3D visualisations of their designs.

What you'll learn

During this course, you will discover how to use 3ds Max, to efficiently produce and edit 3D visualisations and animations of the 3D objects created.

You will learn:

  • the basic modelling techniques;
  • how to model from 2D objects;
  • how to add materials to your objects and light them;
  • how to create cameras to produce 3D visuals and animations.

Course entry requirements

To join this course, you will need enthusiasm for learning 3ds Max in 3D, but experience in 3D CAD is not required.

You need to attend an interview – in person or by phone. Phone interviews can be arranged, as necessary; call 0117 3122703 or email CAD@cityofbristol.ac.uk.

If you want a college-based, in-person interview, sessions are on Wednesdays at the College Green Centre, during term time, in room 6E22H, at 16:00.

You do not need to book, just sign in at reception and allow upwards of an hour, just in case you visit us at a busy time. Other times can be arranged, simply call, or email as above.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is a flexi-course which allows you to attend college as and when you can. Once enrolled, you can tailor your course timing to suit your needs. The course takes around 90 hours to complete, which must be done within a year of starting – how quickly is up to you.

You will be assessed through an end-of-course 3ds Max project creating: a 3D model, multiple visualisations and an animation. Once successful, you will receive a College Certificate along with an Autodesk ATC Certificate of Completion confirming your achievement.

Future career and study opportunities

After successfully completing this course, you will be equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to use 3ds Max to effectively produce 3D visualisations and carry out basic 3D animation.

This course can help start, or progress, you on a career which requires the ability to create 3D models, visualisation and animation. This could include Construction, TV/Film, Gaming and Industrial Design.

You can progress onto other CAD courses such as Revit, Inventor, Fusion360.

Enrolment on the course entitles you to download a free copy of 3DS Max, for educational purposes, from Autodesk. It is assumed you already have a suitable computer to use this on. If you can’t / don’t want to use the College’s CAD Windows computers, Mac computers can be used, simply call / email for further information.
