Computing and Cybersecurity Level 1 City of Bristol College

Learn the fundamentals of information technology.

This one-year course, studied across 9 hours per week at our College Green Centre, provides an introduction to computing to help you develop the skills you will need to progress onto our Level 2 courses, in particular Computing and Cybersecurity L2 or Games Design, VFX and Animation.

There is also an option for apprenticeship or employment within the IT sector. Computing areas that we deliver include:

  • Modern Website Design and Development
  • Cybersecurity
  • Programming
  • Games Design and Development
  • Personal Progression

In addition, you will also take English and Maths GCSE / Functional Skills qualifications. Many of our students remain with us from Level 1, all the way to Level 3 and then apply to university or apprenticeships.

Who is this course for?

If you’re a school leaver and interested in computing, this course is an ideal stepping stone towards achieving your ambition.

What you'll learn

Throughout the course, you will develop your personal and employability skills and complete practical assignments.
You will complete the following vocational units:

  • Modern Website Design and Development
  • Cybersecurity
  • Programming
  • Games Design and Development
  • Personal Progression

You will also take an English and Maths GCSE / Functional Skills qualification at the right level for you.

Course entry requirements

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to tour our excellent facilities and ask any questions you may have.

You will be asked to provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

You need 3 GCSEs at Grade 1 to Grade 3, including Maths and English, or a previous vocational qualification.

Some Level 1 qualifications in trade-based subjects may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed in a variety of ways to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills throughout the year. There are no exams, just assignment-based projects.

You will also complete an English and Maths assessment/exam.

Future career and study opportunities

Next steps upon successful completion could be progression onto a Level 2 course; Computing and Cybersecurity Level 2 or Games Design, VFX and Animation.

Alternatively, you could progress on to an apprenticeship or employment. 

Additional costs

The course is free to anyone between the age of 16-18 years of age.

Many courses offer learning opportunities that you may need to pay for. This may include things like study visits and visiting speakers. We will let you know in advance if there will be additional costs.

If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
